New York, May 8, 1911.
My dear Miss Addams:--
Your very admirable and inspiring work "Twenty Years at Hull House" has been in my possession for some time. Like everybody else I have found in it much food for thought, much help and also consolation. The greatest comfort of all to be derived from it is to know that there are such women as you in this world. May you live long in bodily and mental health and vigor to continue the work which you have inaugurated and which is an example to all those who are willing to serve their fellowmen.
I am happy [today] to be able to send you again a little product of my pen representing the much enlarged and revised edition of my International Prize Essay "Tuberculosis as a Disease of the Masses and How to Combat it." Accept it as a token of my esteem and in grateful appreciation of the inspiration which your life and work has been and is to the author. The extra copy is for the Hull House Library.
It is not impossible that I shall be in Chicago sometime between the 15th and 20th of June. Should you be in town I shall certainly avail myself of the opportunity of paying my respects.
Believe me,
Very faithfully yours,
S. A. Knopf
