My dear Dr. Ely:

I am asking Miss Gernon to hand you the manuscript owing to a certain nervous dislike to entrust it to the express company. From our estimates the book ought to contain almost exactly the same number of pages as Democracy and Social Ethics, although it boasts one more chapter. I am sorry that it isn't better, but I do not believe that I will improve it by working on it any longer.
