Biographical Text

Cyrus Hall McCormick, Jr. was the son of inventor Cyrus Hall McCormick, Sr. He became president of the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company after his father died in 1884. McCormick retained his presidency when the company merged to become International Harvester Company in 1902. During his presidency, he had issues with unions and took actions that led to the Haymarket Square Massacre of 1886. He relinquished the presidency to his brother, Harold McCormick, in 1918 and became a philanthropist. McCormick died in 1936.

McCormick married Harriet Bradley Hammond in 1889. Together they had three children.

His sister, Anita McCormick Blaine, was an influential philanthropist who was instrumental in Addams' work. McCormick himself was a frequent donor to Hull House.
