Biographical Text

Florence Kelley was a social and political reformer who worked against sweatshops, promoting minimum wage, eight-hour workdays, and children's rights. She served as the first general secretary of the National Consumers League and helped create the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She was also a member of the Intercollegiate Socialist Society and helped establish the New Century Guild of Philadelphia. Kelley became the first woman to hold statewide office when she was appointed to the position of Chief Factory Inspector for the state of Illinois. From 1899 to 1926 she lived in Henry Street Settlement, where she founded the National Consumers League and worked for labor rights.

Kelley married Lazare Wischnewetzky in 1884. They had three children: Nicholas, Margret, and John. The couple later divorced in 1891. Kelley died in 1932.

Kelley lived in Hull-House from 1891 to 1899. Many of her achievements in activism were made while still living at Hull House. She worked closely with Jane Addams and other residents to push forward against child labor.
