Biographical Text

Bainbridge Colby was a lawyer and politician. He received his Bachelor's from Williams College. He then attended Columbia Law School and graduated from New York Law School. In 1901 he served as a Republican member of the 29th New York State Assembly. In 1912 he left the Republican Party to join Theodore Roosevelt's newly formed Progressive Party. Colby ran as a Progressive in the New York state election in 1914 and 1916, losing both elections. In 1917 he was a special assistant to the United States Attorney General, Thomas Watt Gregory. He later served on the United States Shipping Board During World War I. Colby was appointed to the position of Secretary of State from 1920 to 1921 by President Wilson. Following their time in office, Wilson and Colby briefly partnered at a law firm that both men had left by 1923.

Colby married Katherine Sedgwick in 1895. They had three daughters, Frances, Nathalie, and Katherine. They divorced in 1928. The following year Colby married Ann Ahlstrand Ely. Colby died in 1950.
