Biographical Text

Ernest Stagg Whitin was an author and teacher. He studied at Columbia University. Whitin taught and assisted social legislation classes at Columbia from 1903 to 1918. He published Factory Legislation, State of Maine, Penal Servitude, and Caged Man between 1908 and 1913. He worked as the chairman of the National Committe on Prisons and Prison Labor from 1908 until his death. Throughout his career as a sociologist, Whitin informed people on the corruption in prisons and existence of indentured servitude in America.

Whitin died in 1946.
