Biographical Text

Fred A. Busse was a was a fixture of the Illinois Republican Party. He was elected to the State Legislature in 1894, where he served until 1902, when he was elected State Treasurer. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed him Postmaster. He served as Mayor of Chicago from 1907-1911, as the first under the new four year term system. However, his term was full of corruption and bribery. Pressure from conscientious citizens forced him to make a vice commission to address the problem, though he was no longer in office when they presented their findings. Busse died in 1914 of vascular diseases.

Busse married Josephine Lee in 1908.
