Biographical Text

Edward Fitzsimmons Dunne was trained as a lawyer and served on the Chicago Circuit Court as a judge from 1892-1905. He resigned after being elected the Mayor of Chicago, serving from 1905-1907. Dunne was the mayor when Upton Sinclair's The Jungle was released and dealt repercussions. He then ran for and obtained the position of Governor of Illinois in 1912. Dunne pushed forward many Progressive policies while working in politics. After his stint in politics, he went back to being a lawyer and also wrote a series on the History of Illinois. Dunne died in 1937.

Dunne married Elizabeth F. Kelly in 1881. They had thirteen children, nine survived into adulthood.
