Biographical Text

Charles Evans Hughes was an American lawyer, judge, and influential Republican politician. Hughes was elected governor of New York (1907-1910) where he pushed an agenda of social and government reform. In 1916, Hughes was appointed to the Supreme Court, where he was known for expanding the regulatory powers of the government. In 1916 Hughes resigned his position on the Supreme Court in order to run for president, losing a close election to Woodrow Wilson. In 1921, Hughes joined the Harding Cabinet as Secretary of State. He was involved in the 1922 Washington Naval Conference and ending the United States' occupation of the Dominican Republic. He left in 1925, returning to practice law, until 1930. Later, President Hoover appointed him Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, where he served until 1941.

Hughes married Antoinette Carter in 1888 and they had four children, including Charles Evans Hughes, Jr., who served as Solicitor General of the United States. Hughes died in 1948.
