Biographical Text

Catherine Breshkovsky was a Russian social reformer and anarchist. Born to a noble family, Breshkovsky joined the Narodnik movement to overthrow the Tsarist government in the 1870s and in 1878 was was exiled to a Siberian work camp. After her release in 1896, she formed the Socialist Revolutionary Party, and became a key player, dubbed "Babushka," the grandmother of the Russian Revolution. She fled the Russian government in 1901, stopping in Switzerland and the United States, where she spoke against the Russian government and raised funds for its enemies. She returned to Russia in 1905 and led the opposition until arrested in 1907 and again sent to Siberia. She was released in 1917 when the Tsarist government fell, and became part of the Kerensky government. After its fall, she was exiled to Czechoslovakia, by the Bolsheviks.

Breshkovsky married Nikolai Breshko-Breshkovsky a liberal nobleman in 1869. They had one son, Nikolas Breshko-Breshkovsky, who was raised by his aunt to reject his mother's beliefs. She died in 1934 in Czechoslovakia.
