Biographical Text

Edward Osgood Brown received his undergraduate education at Brown University, and then his law degrees from Brown and the Dane School at Harvard. He worked as an assistant clerk to the Supreme Court of Rhode Island from 1870 to 1871, before creating the law firm Peckham and Brown in Chicago in 1872. Brown then became a judge and was known for being a Radical Democrat. In 1893 he was a candidate for the Superior Court of Cook County, but he did not receive the appointment. He was the counsel for the Lincoln Park Commissioners before being elected to the Circuit Court for Cook County, Illinois, which was followed by an appointment to the Appellate Court for the First (Chicago) District. He was also a member of numerous clubs and organizations, such as the Iroquois Club of Chicago, the University Club of Chicago, the Chicago Literary Club, and the Reform Club of New York.

Brown married Helen Gertrude Eagle in 1884 and had five children: Edward, Helen, Walter, Robert, and Mary. Brown died in 1923.
