Biographical Text

Mary Emma Woolley was the first female student to attend Brown University. She served as the eleventh President of Mount Holyoke College from 1900 to 1937. Woolley taught at Wheaton Seminary in Norton, Massachusetts after graduating from there, and later taught biblical history and literature at Wellesley College. She toured England in 1900 in order to study women's educational practices and problems, bringing her findings to Mount Holyoke College. She was also the vice president of the American Civil Liberties Union and president of American Association of University Women. Woolley worked with President Herbert Hoover on women's rights and President Franklin D. Roosevelt on pacifism. Hoover appointed her as a delegate to the Conference on Reduction and Limitation of Armaments in 1932.

Woolley lived in a life-partnership with Jeannette Augustus Marks for fifty-five years. Marks cared for her in her final years of life after a cerebral hemorrhage partially paralyzed her. Woolley died in 1947.
