Biographical Text

Ethel Lillian Dewey was a longtime resident and teacher at Hull-House. She was a student at the University of Chicago before moving to the settlement. Once there, she was active in the organization's musical programming. She became involved with the Hull-House Boys' Club, heading the group's quartette and glee club. At the Hull-House Music School, she taught singing lessons for children. Additionally, Dewey acted as both the director and treasurer of the Monroe Debating and Reading and Gymnastic Club. She was also a member of Hull-House's branch of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Her involvement and commitment allowed her to become a fixture of the settlement and Dewey was often left in charge of Hull-House when Jane Addams was away on vacation or business. Further, outside of the House, she was a member of the Chicago College Club and part of the Democratic Party. After her many years at Hull-House, she moved to Los Angeles.

Dewey died in 1966.
