My dear Miss Addams:

You are probably getting so many comments pro and con on your political activity that one more will hardly count, but a letter from Miss Balch indicates that she has gotten from you such a wrong impression of my opinion that I venture to send you a copy of the letter which I have written her. I have often been taken to task by my friends, but have never had a sermon composed so directly for my own benefit which I so little deserved, and I am still puzzled as to where the text is to be found.

Faithfully yours,

Edward T. Devine [signed]

Miss Jane Addams,
Hull House,
Chicago, Ill.
