Jane Addams to Alde Blake, July 13, 1912

July 13, 1912.

My dear Mrs. Blake: --

I am afraid I shall have to decline to speak to the Ladies' Literary League in the middle of October, at an afternoon meeting, when the campaign is still on.

It seems to me that the thing to do is to get at the voters and I should be very sorry not to have men in the audience.  Ordinarily, when no campaign is on, I do not make this distinction but I am sure it would be a mistake to lay too much stress on a woman's meeting just then. I understand that I can take a train back to Chicago at midnight which would be quite satisfactory.

I am afraid I shall have to leave the date open a little longer until Ann Arbor and Detroit are arranged.

Sincerely yours,

Jane Addams [signed]

Mrs. W. F. Blake
Grand Rapids, Michigan.
