Biographical Text

William Randolph Hearst was a politician and newspaper publisher, and the founder of the media company Hearst Communications. He attended Harvard College, but was expelled due to misbehavior. In 1887, he became the manager of the San Francisco Examiner, and in 1895 he bought the New York Morning Journal, hiring well-known writers and giving the newspaper a reputation for being one of the best employers in the New York newspaper industry at the time. Hearst's newspapers were known for using yellow journalism and for focusing on left wing or Democratic party politics. From 1903 to 1907, he was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat. He also ran for mayor of New York City, governor of New York, and for the Democratic nomination for president in 1904, though he lost all these elections.

Hearst married Millicent Veronica Willson in 1903. They had five children together. Hearst also had an affair with actress Marion Davies, having a daughter with her. He and Millicent separated due to the affair, but remained legally married for the remainder of Hearst's life. Hearst died in 1951.
