Biographical Text

Margaret Haley was born to two Irish immigrant parents. She attended the Illinois Normal School, Cook County Normal School, and the Buffalo School of Pedagogy. After teaching in one of Chicago's poorest districts for 16 years, Haley joined the newly formed Chicago Teachers' Federation (CTF) in 1897. After becoming the organization's vice president, she soon left teaching altogether to devote her time to union work. The CTF fought for higher salaries, pensions, tenure, and better school conditions. Haley believed that education and school reform would ultimately lead to social reform, and her fights to improve the public school system revolved around that belief. Haley died of a heart attack in 1939.
