December 29, 1910.
My dear Miss Addams:
I have your letter of December 28th. I shall be glad to give you $100 for the year 1910, and herewith hand you a check for that amount. I would like to mention here, however, that I would not care to consider this an annual contribution. I forget the circumstances under which I made this pledge, but I have a faint idea that it was made at a time when you were particularly desirous of installing some one of your particular institution and that I have dealt more in the desire to give you a start than with the purpose of becoming an annual contributor. It may very likely be that I should turn out to be such, but I would not like to go on record now or have it understood that I intend to be, and I say this simply in order that you may not bank on the $100 annually.
With kindest regards and best wishes for the new year, believe me
Very truly yours,
