Biographical Text

Elizabeth Thacher Kent was an environmental and suffrage activist. Married to politician William Kent, she helped her husband in his efforts to purchase 611 acres of land, donating 295 of it a national park. When William Kent was elected to Congress in 1910, she became involved with the Suffragist Movement. She was arrested twice at White House pickets in 1917 before women gained the right to vote in 1921. Kent later became involved with the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and participated in the meeting of the United Nations in San Francisco in 1945.

Kent married William Kent in 1890. Together they had seven children: Albert, Thomas, Elizabeth, William, Adaline, Sherman, and Roger.
