My dear Mr. Thomas:

I am very sorry it will be impossible for me to accept the appointment you suggest in February. I have been in my room for almost three weeks with bronchitis and have been obliged to decline many speaking engagements, even for the German children.

I have some speaking engagements in New York late in March and may come to Philadelphia for a few days then, in which case I will let you know and perhaps can take one or two appointments then.

With regret that I am such a "feeble reed" at the present moment, I am
