Dear Miss Addams:
A friend gave me a sheaf of Chicago newspapers today from which I learned that some Catholics -- and Catholic clergymen -- have been displaying in public towards you not only a lack of Christian courtesy but also most deplorably a lack of understanding which is positively portentous. As a fellow Catholic and priest, I am deeply mortified. You were exceedingly good to me in my efforts to help Mrs. Ray; and you have always been to me a profound and wholesome inspiration. I pray God to bless and comfort you in the pursuit of your truly Catholic ideals.
Sincerely,
John Handly
