Biographical Text

Alice Hamilton was an expert in occupational health and toxicology, and the first woman appointed to Harvard University's faculty. She attended the University of Michigan Medical School with plans to become a doctor but later decided to become a research scientist instead. After spending some time in Germany, Hamilton became a research assistant at Johns Hopkins Medical School, working for pathologist Simon Flexner. In 1897 she became a professor of pathology at the Women's Medical School of Northwestern University, and later she was a bacteriologist at Chicago's Memorial Institute for Infectious Diseases. While in Chicago, she lived in Hull House, where she researched the causes of typhoid fever and tuberculosis in the area. In 1908 she was appointed to the Illinois Commission on Occupational Diseases, and from 1911 to 1920 she served as an investigator for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. While serving this position, Hamilton studied the manufacture of white lead and lead oxide, and she suggested how to make working conditions safer. In 1919 she was appointed assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, making her the first woman professor at the university. From 1924 to 1930 she was a member of the League of Nations Health Committee. Due to her belief that people should express their unpopular views, the Federal Bureau of Investigation followed her activities late into her life.

Hamilton died in 1970.

Hamilton lived at Hull House from 1897-1919. She was Jane Addams' personal physician. She also volunteered her time at Hull House to teach English and art. The pair corresponded over the years about the different research projects and social issues that they were dealing with.
