Description

The Hull House Coffee Shop opened in July of 1893. The Shop was opened to combat the large number of saloons in the Hull-House area and served non-alcoholic drinks and food. The shop was also used for various classes, such as naturalization courses. Financed by trustee William H. Colvin (1869-1896) for a short time, the Coffee Shop was rebuilt in 1939 at a cost of $10,000. It was then decided that the Shop should be leased out with rent being paid to Hull-House rather than being operated by Hull-House.
