National Federation of Women Workers

Dear Jane Addams,
It has been suggested to me in connection with the Mary Macarthur Memorial appeal, copies of which I enclose, that many of her American friends would wish to contribute to this fund, and that for their convenience an American Committee should be set up.
If such a Committee is formed, I should greatly desire that you would allow your name to be associated with it.
I have also written to Lillian Wald and Julia Lathrop, and I suggest that if you agree, Mrs. Raymond Robins should act as convener, together with any other names, of course, which any of you care to suggest.
The idea of the scholarship is to enable us not only to train suitable women for work in the Movement here, but that it should also be possible to have [traveling] scholarships to link up internationally the various [Labor] groups; and we can think of no better way of perpetuating her memory than by this means of the Mary Macarthur scholarships.
With regard to the Convalescent Home, I may explain that there is already a fund which is to be devoted to that purpose, and there are a certain number of people who will be anxious to give to that; but we feel sure the scholarship idea will be the one to which our American friends would prefer to subscribe. Do let me have any suggestions which occur to you in this connection.
We are sending under separate cover copies of the Memorial numbers of the [Labor] papers.
With kindest regards,
Yours very sincerely,
Margaret G. Bondfield [signed]
