Biographical Text

Ernest P. Bickwell was a charity worker that served with the Red Cross for 27 years. Originally he worked for Indianapolis newspaper, but took a job as secretary to the Indiana Board of Charities. In 1908, Bickwell was appointed National Director of the American Red Cross. He later moved on to director-general of civilian relief. During World War I, he served as deputy commissioner for France and a commissioner to Belgium. Bickwell died in 1935.

Bicknell married Cora Scott in 1886. They had one son. Cora died in January of 1888. Bicknell then married Grace Vawter in 1891. They had four daughters.
