Both Sir William Beveridge and Sir William Goode make it plain that in the coming months entire populations in Europe will be without sufficient bread, and low feeding and the disease it breeds will have worked terrible havoc over a large area of the Continent. The situation is such as the Allies cannot ignore. The simplest feelings of humanity work together with considerations of their own future interests to forbid any passing by on the other side of the way. Nations which have fought with us and have fought against us are threatened with a common fate that would be counted among the great tragedies of the world. In these circumstances we have a plea to make to America. She alone has the resources adequate to avert a world catastrophe.
