Biographical Text

Leonard Hobhouse attended Marlborough College, and then Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and graduated with a first-class degree in 1887. He was then a prize fellow at Oxford at Merton College, and then became a full fellow at Corpus Christi. From 1897 to 1907, Hobhouse worked as a journalist and as the secretary of a trade union. In 1907 he became the chair of sociology at the University of London. Hobhouse was very influential within the New Liberal Movement, theorizing ideas on property ownership and usage.

Hobhouse married Nora Hadwen in 1891. They had three children together: Reginald, Leonora, and Majory. Hobhouse died in 1929.
