Biographical Text

Louis F. Post began his career as an editor for the Hackettstown Gazette, and then studied to be a lawyer but soon became the editor and a contributor to several reviews. He created a review in Chicago called The Public, which focused on economic and political issues. Post was known for his views on the single tax. In 1913, he was appointed by Woodrow Wilson to the position of the Assistant Secretary of Labor. Due to a change in other people's positions, he was also in charge of the Bureau of Immigration for two months in 1920. His work with the Bureau of Immigration and as Assistant Secretary of Labor allowed him to combat some of the efforts of J. Edgar Hoover and A. Mitchell Palmer during the Palmer Raids in 1920. His methods were considered controversial, and Hoover and Palmer called for his impeachment due to an abuse of power. Post was able to successfully defend himself, however, and avoided being impeached. Post also published many books, including Outlines of Louis F. Post's Lectures on the Single Tax, Absolute Free Trade, the Labor Question, and Progress and Poverty.

Post married Anna Johnson, and they had two children together, Edna and Charles. She died in 1891 and he married Alice Thacher. He died in 1928.
