Biographical Text

John Dewey was a philosopher who founded the philosophical movement known as pragmatism. He was a leader in functional psychology and a leader of the progressive education movement in the U.S. Dewey taught psychology and philosophy at the University of Michigan, the University of Chicago, and Columbia. He developed a progressive philosophy of education and advocated strongly for democracy. Dewey believed schools and civil society were two things that needed much reconstruction in order to promote experimental intelligence.

Dewey was married to Alice Chipman. They had six children: Frederick, Evelyn, Morris, Gordon, Lucy, and Jane. After the death of his wife in 1927, he later married Roberta Lowitz Grant in 1946. They adopted two siblings, Lewis, changed to John Jr., and Shirley. Dewey died in 1952.

Dewey was good friends with Addams and they often visited each other while both were in Chicago. He gave talks at Hull-House and discussed a new periodical for philosophy with Addams.
