Biographical Text

Mary Kingsbury Simkhovitch was the founder of the Greenwich House, a settlement house in Greenwich Village in New York City. She attended Boston University, where she volunteered at a teenage girls' club at Boston's St. Augustine's Episcopal Church and at St. Monica's Home for old colored women. After graduating college, Simkhovitch worked as a teacher at Somerville High School in Massachusetts. In 1894 she started to study for a graduate degree at Radcliffe College, and in 1895 she attended the University of Berlin. While in Berlin, she met Vladimir Gregorievitch Simkhovitch, who she later married. Afterward, she attended Columbia University, and in 1902 she founded the Greenwich House. In 1905 Simkhovitch was a member of the Committee of Fourteen, which was working to reduce prostitution in New York City.

Simkhovitch married Vladimir Gregorievitch Simkhovitch in 1899. Simkhovitch died in 1951.
