March 15, 1918.
Dear Miss Addams:
I am enclosing a copy of a statement in which I announced on March 4th, my candidacy for election to the United States Senate from Nevada in the coming campaign. I am running as an Independent and shall make an appeal to the members of all political parties from a non-partisan point of view, very much as we did in the suffrage campaign which you helped us to win in 1914. I am leaving for the West shortly. The first thing I shall do will be to work up a state conference of the Nevada Women's Civic League. I plan to hold a mass meeting late in April or May in Reno to begin my campaign and as I wired you, it could not be begun under any better auspices than by having you as our chief speaker. Do you think you can possibly do this? You would do more than any other one person could, to place my campaign at the start on a very high level and to unite the women.
I hope to hear from you very soon and to hear also that your health is improved as a result of your rest in California.
