Biographical Text

Robert Browning was a Victorian poet and playwright. By the age of twelve Browning had written a book of poetry. He destroyed it, however, because he could not find a publisher for it. Not taking to private school, he was educated privately in his home by a tutor. When he was sixteen he studied Greek at University College London, but he stayed only a year. He then dedicated himself to his poetry, writing while living with his parents until the age of thirty-four, when he married. Until then, his poems were published through his father's sponsorship. In 1833 Browning's first poem, "Pauline, a Fragment of a Confession," was published anonymously. The poem gained much praise and attention, though also some criticism. In 1835, Browning published Paracelsus, which opened the literary doors for him. He then met Macready, who had him write a play, leading to the creation of Strafford. He wrote numerous other plays and poems afterward, including Bells and Pomegranates no. 1-7, Men and Women, and The Ring and the Book.

In 1845, Browning met Elizabeth Barrett, They had one child together, Robert Wiedemann Barrett Browning. Barett died in 1889.
