Biographical Text

Irene Osgood Andrews was a writer and activist who was concerned about the effects of factory work on women and the legal protections afforded to workers. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1905, and then undertook social work for the Minneapolis Associated Charities and did factory inspections in Wisconsin. In 1907 she became the head resident of the Northwestern Settlement. She published 10 works on the women and industry, including Minimum Wage Legislation (1918).

Osgood moved to New York City, where she married John Bertram Andrews in 1910. He was the secretary for the American Association of Labor Legislation, and she became involved in the organization, working as his assistant. She and Addams corresponded extensively, especially about the future of the American Association for Labor Legislation. In the 1920s Andrews worked with the New York League for Women Voters' Legislative Committee.

John and Irene Andrews had a son, John Osgood Andrews.
