Biographical Text

Paul Warburg was born into the wealthy banker Warburg family. In 1886, he graduated from the Realgymnasium in Hamburg. In 1891 he began working for the family bank, officially becoming a member of the firm in 1895 when he returned from a world tour. Warburg eventually settled in New York in 1902, becoming a partner of Kuhn, Loeb & Co. He remained a member of his family's firm but became an American citizen in 1911. In 1910 he was elected to be Director of Wells Fargo & Company. In 1914 he was appointed to the Federal Reserve Board. In 1919, Warburg founded and became the first chairman of the American Acceptance Council, and did the same for the International Acceptance Bank of New York in 1921. When the International Bank was acquired by Bank of the Manhattan Company in 1929, Warburg served as its chairman. In 1921 he became director of the Council on Foreign Relations, and from 1921 to 1926 he was a member of the advisory council of Federal Reserve Board, serving as its president from 1924 to 1926. He was also a trustee of the Institute of Economics and remained a trustee after it merged into the Brookings Institution.

Warburg married Nina J. Loeb in 1895. They had two children together. Warburg died in 1932.
