My dear Miss Addams:
Thanks very much for the pamphlet containing the notes which you used in your Kansas City speech. I have read it with the liveliest interest and if possible shall use some parts of it in The New Republic, although I cannot be entirely sure of doing so because our own work in [the ↑near↓] future is cut out along different lines.
Your approval of the kind of work which The New Republic has been trying to do in respect to making of the war as much use as it can possibly be made for international organization, is deeply gratifying to us. In thanking you I am expressing Mr. Hackett's and Mr. Johnson's feelings as well as my own. We have been working under great difficulties during the last four or five months owing to the intemperate condition of American public opinion, but I think the worst is over and I am hoping we [page 2] shall have more leeway for work along the same lines in the future than we have had in the past.
