Biographical Text

Booker T. Washington was part of the last generation of African-Americans born into slavery. After being emancipated, he and his mother found her husband in West Virginia. Washington did not gain national fame until his Atlanta Address of 1895, a compromise stating that Southern blacks would submit to white segregation law and that black would be guaranteed an education and equality within the law. Other African-American leaders, like W. E. B. Du Bois, opposed the compromise, but it catapulted Washington into the public light. Washington died in 1915.

Washington married Fannie N. Smith in 1882; she later died in 1884. In 1886, he married Olivia A. Davidson. After Davidson's death in 1889, Washington married Margaret James Murray in 1893. He had three children: Portia, Booker, and Ernest.
