My dear Madam:
The reference in President Roosevelt's recent message to the dearth of statistical data regarding women and children employed in gainful occupations, prompted me to write him a letter on the subject, and this brought to me the information that the reference was included in the message at your suggestion. I am therefore tempted to enclose to you a copy of my letter to the President, which of course you will treate as confidential, and to say to you that it will be a great pleasure to me, and undoubtedly of great advantage to the work upon which we are engaged, if we can secure your active cooperation and suggestion regarding the form and direction it can take to the best advantage. While our plans are well advanced, and our limitations are somewhat fixed by the nature of the material in our possession, it is nevertheless probably that changes and additions may be made, if, after [page 2] conference, it shall appear that the practical value of the publication can thereby be materially increased. I will therefore be obliged to you if you will write me and tell me whether the suggestion appeals to you. If it does, we can then give consideration to means fo carrying it out.
