My dear Miss Addams:
A plan is under way to secure for a Memorial in behalf of National Prohibition, the signatures of one thousand men of eminence in American life. Among those to be appealed to will be manufacturers, bankers, railway presidents, university leaders, scientists, physicians, labor leaders, editors, and men in public life. It is hoped that this demonstration will have a weighty influence in securing wide public support to the policy of alcohol prohibition.
The work of securing the names will be undertaken by a sub-committee of the Committee of Sixty, under the guidance of Prof. Irving Fisher of Yale. The draft of the declaration to be signed is enclosed. Important names have already come in. We should be deeply gratified to have the support of your influential signature in initiating this movement. We can give you the best assurances that it will be put through with judgment and tact.
