Biographical Text

Edwin Seligman was an economist and professor, best known for his work in taxation. He was trained at Columbia University and at European graduate programs. Seligman was hired by Columbia University as a lecturer shortly after he received his doctorate in 1885. He remained actively teaching until 1931, by which time he was the McVickar Professor of Political Science. Seligman was a prominent economist who worked with the government, helping on Theodore Roosevelt's Committee on Statistical Reorganization (1908), New York City's Tax Committee (1914-1916), and the U.S. House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee (1918-1925). He also advised the governments of Cuba and Mexico on their fiscal systems. Seligman wrote over fifteen books on topics in economics. Seligman died in 1939.

Seligman married Caroline Beer in 1888. They had three children, Eustace J., Violet, and Hazel.
