Biographical Text

William Dean Howells was born in Martinsville, now Martins Ferry, Ohio in 1836. After completing a consulship in Venice from 1861-1865, he became assistant editor (1866-1871), and later editor (1871-1881), of The Atlantic Monthly. During his time with the magazine, Howells began his literary career, which spanned the genres of fiction, poetry, and one autobiography. Some of his most well-known books include The Rise of Silas Lapham (1885) and A Hazard of New Fortunes (1890). Howells died in 1920 and was buried in Cambridge, MA.
