Biographical Text

Carter Henry Harrison Jr. was the Mayor of Chicago from 1897-1905 and 1911-1915. His father who was also Mayor of Chicago. He studied in Germany until his mother died in 1876. Harrison the graduated from Loyola University in 188 and received a law degree from Yale University. He operated The Chicago Times from 1891 to 1895 with his brother. Harrison then served as a captain with the American Red Cross in France during World War I. In 1933 he was appointed to Collector of Internal Revenue. While serving as mayor, Harrison worked on many reforms, including closing the Levee red-light district, starting with closing the Everleigh Club brothel.

Harrison married Edith Ogden Harrison in 1887. They had three children, two of which survived to adulthood. Harrison died in 1953.
