Biographical Text

William McKinley was the 25th President of the United States. He attended Allegheny College and was working as a teacher when the Civil War began, he became a brevet major of the Union Army. After the war, he studied law and opened a law office in Canton, Ohio. When McKinley was thirty-four he won a seat in Congress and was appointed to the Ways and Means Committee. In 1891 he was elected Governor of Ohio, and in 1897 he was elected President of the United States. McKinley was leading Republican tariff expert who raised protective tariffs to promote American industry. He led the U.S. to victory during the Spanish-American War, leading to the U.S. annexation of the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico.

McKinley married Ida Saxton in 1871. They had two children together. McKinley was assassinated in 1901.
