My dear Mrs. Walton: --
I have been in communication with many of the existing Peace Societies ever since the war began, and quite agree with you that we need to rally the forces of those who are against increasing our army and navy.
I do not believe, however, that this is the time to start a new society. I have sent your letter to the secretary of our local Peace Society and shall be happy to discuss your scheme with him, although at the moment it seems to me that it would be better to work through existing organizations than to start anything new. While they may seem inefficient they have really been largely responsible for the splendid sentiment for peace which has characterized America.
Sincerely yours,
Jane Addams [signed]
